Pre-Conference

Lightning Talks

Lightning Talks are short, 5 minute talks. Anyone who is present at that moment (between 430pm - 700pm) can talk. As crazy as it may sound, we are dead serious about it.

So how does it work? Simple. You go to the microphone, pick it up, gather your own crowd and talk. Unless you have a crowd, you can talk no longer than 5 minutes. Even if you have a crowd, you can talk no longer than 10 minutes.

What can I talk about? Anything. But, strictly no for-profit selling. Our theme for this conference is Ideas & Causes. The InteresThink Team will be very un-nice to you if you betray our trust.

Do I need to register for this to speak? No. It's supposed to be spontaneous. We do, however, encourage you to indicate within the registration form that you are interested to do a Lightning Talk. That will help us estimate the interest level for this talk.

I seriously don't think that this will work! Well, let us prove you wrong then. ;-) Find out more about Lightning Talks on Wikipedia.

Causes & Ideas Booths

We have invited a number of Non Profit Organisations with important Causes and projects to exhibit. We will list them here as they confirm their presence.

If you belong to a formal/informal group and would like your voice to be heard, please send a short email to us telling us about “Your Cause” to team@InteresThink.com.

If you are an individual with an idea that you would like to amplify, we invite you to hold your own space here too. You can bounce your idea off our fabulous crowd at the Lightning Talk. You can also have your own booth. Just drop us an email at team@InteresThink.com.

If you like our event and what we are doing, help us defray our costs by making a donation. All donations will be held in trust by Kelvin Quee. All donations will go towards our expenses. Any excess will go towards funding the next event.

We will provide a box for you to drop your cash contributions. Make all cheques payable to “Quee Yew Hao Kelvin”.

Thank You!

Jiin JooIDASuffering from ADHD - it's bad enough to be a computer geek AND a band geek, and having to pretend that I'm ok especially at work. You might see me at IDA/Infocomm events telling you all about the Great Network coming soon to your doorstep, or you might see me in Esplanade with various orchestra / concert band etc., or even online on jiinjoo.com. But you must see me if you have some big great idea about how to change people's lives (for fun and/or profit) when you're given a dedicated 100Mbps connectivity to almost everywhere on this island.I've been publishing sheet music for two years now, looking for some people eager to challenge the IP framework around publishing music.

Natalia TanStudent I am a student-in-transit: just graduated from Anglo-Chinese Junior College, and currently waiting very patiently while bearded old Brits in cold rooms decide my academic fate and US college admissions officers debate; also thinking of how to put food on my plate for the next half a year or so. I like to think and write and do.Too many things: gaming, gardening, gay rights, geylang food, uh okay I'll stop with the appalling alliteration and assonance. I'm also into youth causes, entrepreneurship, film, theatre and dance, technology, economics, the environment, DIY crafting/sewing, and education.
Sarah LeckStudentAn 18-year-old student who's just finished her 'A' Levels and heard about this event from a friend. Interested in the ideas that people have, interested in interacting with the different people who'll be attending this event, interested in finding a passion from the pool of ideas generated in this event.I can't say I've really found something I'm passionate in, but I suppose getting to know new and quirky people is one. Reading, art, music, poetry and travelling as well.

Ziling AwSometimes, I do not understand certain humans and their certain actions. Also, I often question my existence on Earth and the meaning of life. I like talking to young kids and old people. Young kids are so pristine and innocent and they speak their minds most of the time (well, most of them anyways). Old people have a hell lot of life experiences to share and most of the time, all they want/need is a listening ear.Volunteer work overseas, educating kids in less developed/developing countries. My dream is to travel the world and help anybody/everybody (who needs help) in every way (however little) I deem possible.
Kai Xiang, AngA photographer by profession, I've graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Film Sound and Video, after a failed 1 year stint at Singapore Poly doing Computer Networking Technology. Much as I enjoy technology and all the benefits it brings, I know I won't want to be troubleshooting it when it fails. I rather enjoy art in all its forms. I love documentry making and enjoy behind-the-scenes kind of work as well, be it both in video or stills. I think I'll enjoy listening to the lightning talks. In any conversation, I tend to listen more than speak. Having a whole host of people sharing ideas and talking about wildly varied topics sounds extreme interesting.Photography? Cycling? Technology? Reading? Music? I'm most passionate about photography really. Much as I like filming, photography is my first love. There is a certain satisfaction that cannot be derived elsewhere from having captured a slice of time that holds endearing memories or beauty to be appreciated.

Ole TangeOpen MokoI am active in the Free Software movement. My activity is primarily educating people about Free Software or issues that are somehow related to Free Software (such as software patents, Digital Restriction Management, open standards, governments IT spending, IT in the developing world, the One Laptop Per Child). My activity has been focused on Denmark, but has gradually extended to EU level and most recently world level.Currently my passion is investigating what possibilities we would get if all the electronic devices we have in our daily lives ran Free Software, and therefore could be changed by the owner to do amazing things that even the producer of the device never had imagined. The OpenMoko FreeRunner mobile phone may be the first common device that runs completely Free Software and I therefore follow the development of this phone actively.

Mohamad FaridSinghealthI was born 30 solar revolutions ago, and have spent my whole life, most of it at various stages of education, in Singapore. I work as a doctor at the Singapore General Hospital; more specifically, I'm in the 3rd year of my residency in Internal Medicine, currently in the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Work is often all consuming, but I do make time for several interests. I am an avid sportsman, with soccer and rugby being my primary passions. The outdoors is where I feel most at home, never having turned down a chance to negotiate muddy footpaths in nature reserves or trudging up regional highlands. Naked eye astronomy is another of my loves, even if Singapore can be prohibitively bright at night for taking in the splendour of the heavens.I feel strongly about the need for greater rigour and vigour in the popularization of science amongst the general public. It is critically important, not to mention eminently useful, for the citizenry of healthy democracies to engage, and get excited by, science and technology, underpinned by a better apprehension of basic scientific processes and their limitations, as opposed to being blithe end users of its many products. Without better public understanding of how science works, a major and effective tool (i.e. science) for tackling many of the world's major problems is significantly weakened. I have a specific interest in the history of science and its instruction, for the tale of science's birth and development through the ages is nothing less than an adventure story unrivalled by any work of fiction, with educational value equally unparalleled by conventional pedagogy.
RichelleZomedia - ZocardI prefer intellectual conversations to shopping, and would pretty much like to think of myself as a person who goes against the flow when the flow is just flowing through. Being unique works, following the crowd only stifles one's mentality and thoughts about situations.passionate about arts and learning different cultures.
Mathia leeAWAREI work in the biomedical research field, and have a special interest in policies related to public health eg. HIV/AIDS management. I also volunteer at AWARE with their sexuality education programme and doing research with CEDAW. I'm also involved in Christian groups which look at social issues from that perspective. It's my view that many social issues cannot be viewed in isolation, which is why I'm very interested in this opportunity to hear from people from different disciplinesPolicies and programmes related to public health and sexuality.
DarrinI'm a full-time father of two young boys interested in building a more peaceful, cooperative, sustainable world where my (and others') children can grow up and thirve. Most recently, I've been teaching yoga. Previously, I've worked in the corporate world in public relations and client relations. I've also done some organization development consulting. I have masters degree in communication.I'm most interested in exploring and developing ways of resolving interpersonal and intergroup problems in peaceful, cooperative sustainable ways. I' like to see more intercultural, interfaith and cross-boundary dialouge and cooperation in addressing today's global problems. We need to move beyond competition, aggression and the ”“me and my group/religion/country first””. I want to be part of finding ways to do this.

Niki TorresAsian Geographic MagazinesBelief that “if I wanted something so badly that the whole universe would conspire for me to have it” is not just some line I say to myself but a line which I’ve tried, tested, and have found to actually be true. At twenty-two and with a whole bag full of dreams, I’ve set myself up for some really big ones this coming decade and two of the major goals I have are: to travel and to write. To be a travel writer is the easiest and most obvious way to achieve this, but with no substantial writing portfolio, much less traveling, where do I begin? Answer: neo nomad If you Google it you’d find out that neo nomads are technological geeks whose work stations are corners of their local cafes armed with their laptops and a dozen cups of coffee. I think I fit the bill seeing that I’m a bit of a tech and/or geek, stares all day at laptop, and consumes caffeine on a daily basis. The only problem I’m seeing is that I don’t really work remotely like so, because I have a real nine-to-six job. Therefore, allow me to give my own definition of neo nomad. A neo nomad, the way I see it, is someone who has no home or permanent residence and who continuously wanders or travels. For someone who could never get homesick (for real), I think I’m made for this. The plan is: travel to a different country, stay two or three years to work, then move. I’ve already made the first step when I decided to hop on a plane to Singapore only two months after I got my Bachelor’s degree. Next on my agenda, after I’ve saved enough to actually be able to move, is either Australia or London. After that, I’m thinking Barcelona or Greece. After that, who knows? The things is, I think this is something I really want to do because I want to see the world but not merely come as a visitor or as a tourist. I want to experience a place and be a “local” even for just a couple of years. Yes, I’m going to be a neo nomad.

Joel KangU60I'm a geek by training. My own training. Which, by definiton, makes me more of a nerd, really. Newly liberated from the chains of stupidty and lies (read: SCOFFSCOFFSAFSCOFFSCOFF), I spend my days pondering about the layers of philosophy behind Buffy, and pointing at my screen asking Meredith Grey and Susan Meyers to shut the hell up. Biatch. I'm supposed to be looking for a job (so my mom tells me), and I want to (so my head tells me). And I will. Get on it. Soon. Sometimes, when I'm REALLY bored, I do actual work. Like designing websites and panels and stuff like that. All while worrying about my uni apps, because, oh Brown University. <3<3<3. Or whatever other gangsigns teenagers use nowadays. Chai Jun YeaDesign LoftI am an architect, cum furniture and acrylic product designer. I have been practicing architecture for the past 7 years and been doing my acrylic furniture, in particular laptop trays for 2 years. As such, I understand the importance of maintaining the passion for designs and exchanging ideas, between different segments of the design industries. Only then will we have new ideas and bounced off new concepts with other designers. I am passionate mainly in architecture and product design. In the product design, i am more passionate in the search for new concepts of defining a function or its uses. It is not about making a sleek design, but of coming up with an interesting and simple concept, function or products, something that the Japanese and Swiss are quite good at.
Kishan KumarNUSI am a Year 2 student from NUS reading Life Sciences. Even though I am a Science-y sort of person, particularly interested in pathology, my interests lie in many places including singing, community service and a little bit of theater. As an MOE Teaching Award holder, in a few short years I will be a teacher and, to be candid, I can't wait to step into my very own classroom! Education is one of my main interests and concerns. I am deeply passionate about it and believe strongly in the power of education and what it can do and mean for a large number of people, especially the underprivileged. As a Singaporean and a future teacher, I am mainly concerned about Singapore's education system and its curriculum and, to be perfectly honest, basically almost everything about it: from educating the gifted, to creative approaches to teaching, to national education. You name it, I like it… and have something to say about it.

Yoong Ren YanI'm currently in between secondary school and junior college. In the past few years I've done a lot of thinking (maybe too much), and I've grown to realise first how unequal and unjust the world is, and how I'd hate for it to be that way in the future. I've come to the conclusion that if I want to make things better, I can't wait for anyone else to do something about it - I have to act myself. Right now my troubles are that I don't think I'll have time (but that's just the most common excuse), and that I don't know where to start making a difference, and most of all, that I don't know how to start. I'm signing up because I'd like to explore ways of starting. The world, Singapore, social activism, human rights, geography, sociology, politics, philosophy, current affairs, languages, Wikipedia, meteorology.
Lois GohI put in more effort in the stuff i do outside than the stuff in school. Its really quite a pity since “mother will be happy” grades aren't really that hard to achieve if I'd only put in more effort :( In any case, I'm an 18 year old girl who likes reading, writing, singing and acting. Oh, and i recently abandoned my quest in studying for my exams and am now happily curled up on my bed reading The Sandman Vol 8! Hail digression/ procrastination/ Neil Gaiman! I feel that people in the world just don't think enough and if we could just stop for a while, drop everything that we're doing and just think. Think. The world would be a much smarter place to be in. Well, I'm not one for blatant rebellion. Instead, i'd just term it a revision of societal paradigm :) Therefore, i hope that when I'm old and crinkly, I would have made a creative difference, somehow. A life without creativity would be a life lived in vain.

Chetan CettyNUSI am a university student. I heard about this event through a friend and decided to join. I have an interest in a few things, namely literature, philosophy, history, poetry and film. I also have some interest in fields like quantum physics and astronomy, although I rarely delve into it.I tend to delve into abstract stuff like philosphy but I am very concerned with the political affairs in the world and here in Singapore. Having an active citizenry with the right to voice its opinions freely is crucial for the realisation of a democracy. There are still very fundamental problems in Singaporean society which really irk me, and the government is certainly a major contributor of it.
Daniel PflugI am an 18 year old guy who is very interested in music. I not only appreciate music but am also somewhat of a musician myself. I just graduated from Victoria Junior College this year. I am hoping that I can use this forum to voice my concerns about the Singapore Music Scene with regards to international acts. By hearing other concerns brought forward by like-minded peers, I hope to gain ideas and a deeper insight into how to adress the problems that our country faces.I am most passionate about the singaporean music scene with regards to international acts. I personally feel that the singapore music scene can definitely be better improved by bringing in more world class music acts to cater to the diversified tastes in music of the local singaporean.

She is very sorry this registration is late.I'm a girl with fingers in a few pies (&tarts) at once, head in the clouds only sometimes and feet on the ground for the most part. That makes me sound like a very long person, but no, I can get pretty regular. I'm looking for ideas for two groups in particular - a forum group of 15-16 year-olds who would like to promote youth activism (yes, how much vaguer can that get), and a group of people with very little time, quite some artistic talent and heart for (spreading) the arts. responsible consumption, the performing arts, arts for humanity, environmental sustainability, youth and energy, growing energy of other people, finding new energy. also (and irrelevantly), baking.

Harry Daniel FuNoneI am enslaved to the habit of reading. It is for this very reason that I must boast to you of my exciting social life. On friday and saturday nights, when most of the people of my age group are inebriated and socialising on the pretext of otherwise exhibiting that they are sexually available at Clarke Quay (an endeavour I used to participate in so frequently, but recently I've reached the age of reason), I spend them reading scientific literature, philosophy and as many classics I can get my hands on - of which my favourite stands, even after countless other books, the timeless Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. I wish to make a career in scientific research. In other words, my ambition in life is to become a theoratical physicist. I must assure you that I am not just all talk no action. In September 2008, I resigned from state education (or if you would, quit school lah), but for a very good reason. All my life, I've grown up thinking I was to write for a living one day. I then immersed myself in countless books, writing many articles and even attempted at a novel - which I have, to this day, been too embarrassed to send to anyone. As of January 2009, I begin my A levels with physics and mathematics as my main focus (despite being 18 this year). I felt that this leap of faith is justified. I want to change this. My name is Harry, I am 18 this year, and I am not afraid of hard work. If you feel that I may be useful in any way to a project, do approach me.MBTI - I am an INTJ, Politics (with special attention to the situation of our nation), Physics and philosophy.

AmeyNUSJust finished my first semester in NUS. I'm pursuing a degree in chemical engineering because I strongly believe that scientific knowledge and innovation has the potential to solve many of the world's sustainable development problems. Besides science and technology, i have an avid interest in politics and economics. Until i went to a symposium organised by the University of St Gallen this year, my primary interest in politics was firmly rooted in the problems that Singapore faces such press freedom and governmental paternalism. However, meeting people from Belgrade to Buenos Aires has broadened my interest politics. I look forward to this event as an exciting opportunity to meet interesting people and ideas.I am most passionate about science. Quantum physics and astrophysics in particular. Have an interest in neuroscience as well. I am also strongly interested in media and social welfare issues in Singapore. I believe we are living at a time marked by the rise of a new world order and I'm very interested in geopolitics too.

Anne-Marie JohnStudents In Free EnterpriseI would like to attend InterestThink3 to learn more and understand how we can launch projects to solve some of these problems. I am a member of an interest group called Temasek Polytechnic Students In Free Enterprise (TP SIFE). We, TP SIFE, are a non-profit group that aim to mobilise students from tertiary institutes to create economic opportunity through innovative entrepreneurial projects that impart and impact the less fortunate. To do this we need to understand the problems facing society today. I am most passionate about helping find SUSTAINABLE ways to problems facing various groups in society today. Community service projects often last for just a day. But launching a project to help people help themselves is both effective and lasts for the long term. I strongly believe that education is key to achieving this.

Thet Lin ThuEnergy Carta I am a student from Burma. Currently studying in NUS Engineering as an Undergraduate. I have worked (am working) in different fields from editing and publishing to organizing conferences and events. I am very enthusiastic about creating a better world, with better economics with a little less capitalism and competition. I am most passionate about improving the mindsets of the public. To educate them in economics, in current affairs, for a better system of rational choice where rationality derives from good education. This kind of education includes issues of climate change, energy, geopolitics, freedoms of action etc. How all these are not separate issues but one issue: our choices. I want to show people how big an effect they make when they choose to buy an energy saving lamp rather than buy an incandescent, when they choose to drive or take public transport. More importantly, I want to show people that they do matter, that they have the power to make a difference, that only they have the power to make a difference.
